More than just a piece of cake...

Where can you find Gucci purses, Prada shoes, geishas and Disney characters all in one place? You don't have to travel far, just visit a few local cake shops in Phoenix and your senses will truly come alive with breathtaking creations and mouthwatering aromas lingering in the air.
With beautiful, hand crafted designs and heights sometimes reaching well over five feet, cakes can be considered pieces of art, rather than just desserts at special occasions. Sometimes taking months to make, these cakes are intricate and delicate and the masterminds behind the creations are skilled professionals that, instead of just cake decorators, can be considered artists.
Five Arizona State University students set out to find unique, locally owned cake shops in Phoenix. Our goal was to go beyond the chain operated stores of Paradise Bakery and Sprinkles Cupcakes to uncover lesser-known places that offer beautiful, flavorful and distinctive cakes and desserts to their customers.

Kick Ass Kakes is owned and operated by one man out of a house in Phoenix. His philosophy is, whatever ideas customers have for a sculpted cake, can be achieved.
Bamboo Bakery in west Phoenix is owned and operated by Vietnamese immigrants. They specialize in making custom cakes and are unique in that instead of using fondant to cover their cakes, use butter cream to create a nearly perfectly smooth finish.
Let Them Eat Cake, located off East Thomas Road, is a family- owned "cake boutique" that offers customers cupcakes, cakes and chocolate fondue for any occasion.
Tammie Coe Cakes, located in the heart of Arizona, is owned by the "baking super team" Tammie Coe and her husband Michael John. Their apartment style shop offers a wide variety of sophisticated pastries that are uniquely hand crafted with only the freshest ingredients, and sell for a reasonable price.
Cupcakes By Design is a newly opened bakery, specializing in cream-filled cupcakes. Opened in August 2010, the bakery's main focus is to provide friendly service and exceptionally tasty cakes and cupcakes.
